This is a thermographic print of the second painting in a series called ‘Paintings Unfit for Vision’ by interdisciplinary artist Gaz Lawrence. The paintings are designed to be viewed exclusively through thermal imaging (far-infrared light). The series forms part of a larger collaboration between Lawrence and astrophysicists Dr Sebastian von Hausegger and Dr Martin Rey and is believed to comprise the world’s first paintings designed to be viewed exclusively through thermal imaging. The first prototype was unveiled at the Royal Institution, London, in 2025. Self Portrait in a Darkened Room is a unique painting that replicates the artist’s heat signature, the infrared radiation emitted by our bodies, allowing us to be seen even in the absence of visible light.
Made from 12 images from 2 different infrared cameras including the Thermal Master Thor 002 stitched together to create final false colour print of an artwork unfit for human vision.
